The Quezon City Government, through the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO), has organized a series of activities to celebrate the 39th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week, with the theme "Karapatan at Pribilehiyo ng May Kapansanan: Isakatuparan at Ipaglaban!", from July 17 -23.

Starting the celebration, a forum and talkshop titled “Persons with Disabilities Networking with Employers”, was held at the QC DRRMO Conference Room, on July 18, where PWDs learned how to manage their careers and overcome challenges in the workplace. The event also enabled employers to be informed on PWD rights in line with RA 10524 (Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities) and the value of hiring PWDs in their respective companies.
Following this, the city government also conducted free medical consultancy services from QC General Hospital, including optical and hearing check-up for PWDs and SPED students, on July 20 at the QC Hall lobby.

PWDs also participated in the QC DRRMO’s forum on formulating policies for disaster risk reduction program held at Seda Vertis North hotel on July 21, together with representatives from the LGBT community, women, and senior citizens.
The week-long event culminated with a forum and general assembly of the Quezon City Federation of PWD Inc., a job fair for PWDs (in cooperation with the QC PESO) and the Apolinario@153 Cultural Festival on July 21, which coincided with the 153rd birthday of Apolinario Mabini.

This year, Quezon City hosted the 7th Freedom Walk on June 10 – an annual advocacy activity organized by persons with disabilities organizations in coordination and partnership with government agencies, LGUs, NGO and the business sector. The activity was held in partnership with AKAPPinoy, a national federation of advocacy groups for PWDs.
Houses for PWDs
Earlier this year, the city government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Department of Social Workers and Development (DSWD) and Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. for the construction of houses for families of PWDs at Barangay Escopa III. The project has an initial thirty six (36) housing and will have a total of 130 units when completed.
Called as Bistekville 18, it is the city’s first ever housing project to specifically benefit PWDs. The housing project strengthens the city’s commitment in ensuring the efficient accessibility and equal opportunities for PWDs.
PWD Benefits
Seeking to further expand the services for the city’s PWDs and senior citizens, Mayor Herbert M. Bautista, approved an ordinance that will allocate one percent of the city annual budget to be used for programs and projects that will benefit the PWDs and the seniors (Ordinance SP 2355, series of 2014).
Under the ordinance, 1 percent of the total annual budget will be “proportionately divided among senior citizens and PWDs”, since seniors are usually more in number than the PWDs.
The ordinance aims to provide PWDs and senior citizens with programs, projects and activities that include medical/dental services, fitness and wellness, social services, livelihood and employment, legal assistance, and recreation. The Social Services Development Department (SSDD) will cover home health care and assisted living.
The ordinance states that other programs, projects, or activities also include other benefits and privileges under senior citizens and PWDs law.
In addition, PWDs, like senior citizens, are entitled to movie privileges in the city.
