Quezon City Mayor Herbert M. Bautista was invited as panel speaker at the 9th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP 2017) with the theme: “Transformational Changes: Putting Sustainability at the Heart of Action”, from July 24 to 28 at Yokohama, to speak about the city’s best practices on environmental protection including sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The four-day event is organized by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the United Nation’s University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UN UIASS).
As one of the SDG practitioners in the session titled “From Good Practices to Great Transformation: How can the SDGs Bring Scalable Change to Asia”, Mayor Bautista shared the city’s experiences and innovative actions on environmental protection.

yokohama02Quezon City, an ICLEI and C40 city, is exploring a city-to-city cooperation with Osaka on waste management, which could make QC the first city to introduce waste to energy technology in the Philippines.
The panel speakers also discussed with policymakers and representatives from various key organizations how these actions can be expanded.

yokohama03The development agenda, which called for widespread, transformational change, came after the adoption of the 2030 Development Agenda and SDGs in September 2015. Although a growing number of cities, businesses, and non-state actors have taken several innovative good practices, the impact of their actions has been limited.
The forum is part of IGES effort to forge the multi-stakeholder partnerships needed to bring scalable change to Asia.

yokohama04Hideyuki Mori, president, IGES, moderated the session, with Dr. Eric Zusman, governance center, IGES. The other panellists include Mr. Hidemitsu Sasaya, managing executive officer and manager of CSR Promotion Department, Itoen; Mr. Bambang Susantono, vice president of ADB (he has supported city program in ADB); and Ms. Miyuki Hokugo, Tokyo head office, Asahi Shimbun.
