Mayor Bautista Calls for Greater Empowerment of Women

Mayor Herbert M. Bautista urged for greater empowerment of women, in his State of the Women Address delivered during the flag-raising ceremony today, March 19, 2018.

The mayor called on everyone to support and help improve the conditions of women, especially those who suffer from abuse and harassment.

"Mabuti na rin na ang aking ulat sa estado ng mga kababaihan ay natapat sa pag-uumpisa ng cuaresma. Gamitin natin itong panahon ng pagmumuni-muni at pagsisisi para sa isang panahon upang manalangin para sa mas mahusay na mga kondisyon para sa mga nagdurusang kababaihan dito sa Pilipinas at ibang dako ng mundo."

The mayor added that the country has slipped in rank from no. 7 in 2016 to no. 10 globally, in terms of gender fairness and from being the best, it went down to number 2 in the East Asia and the Pacific region on wage equality because of its worsening performance.

Mayor Bautista said that compared to women in the past, women today have reached a higher stature because of their skills, knowledge, passion and determination. The rises in the number of cases reported in the VAW (violence against women) desks indicate that more women are aware of their rights and are emboldened to speak up for these rights, he noted.

He said Women’s Month must be celebrated every year to remind people of the disparity, discrimination and inequality that many women experience in many areas and places.

The mayor said that men should support women who struggle to uplift their quality of life, which is a fight not only women but also for humanity.

"The fight for women’s rights is not only a female fight. Tayong mga kalalakihan ay dapat sinlakas din ang ating pag-suporta sa pag-angat ng kabuhayan ng ating mga kababaihan. Ultimately, the fight for women’s rights is a fight for humanity – a fight to make sure that all of us are treated as the wonderful gifts of creation that we are all meant to be!"

In 2015, Mayor Bautista pledged his support for the HeforShe solidarity movement, a program of the United Nations Women that aims to promote a global support for gender equality.

Quezon City also joined the global movement for Safe Cities for women and children in public spaces, becoming the first local government in the country to partner with UN Women to implement the Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Initiative.

This partnership was supported by the City Council with the passing of the ordinance that strengthened the city’s Gender Development Code and provided penalties for sexual harassment and sexual violence against women in public spaces.
