Thousands of students benefit from the scholars granted by the Quezon City Government through its Scholarship and Youth Development Program (SYDP). But recently, the city government is proud to have a doctorate graduate added to its roll of beneficiaries.

Isagani Mirador Tano was born to a poor family in Calamba, Laguna. His father worked as a car washer while his mother tended a carinderia.

He was in his second year in high school when his father died. As his mohter's income was not enough to suppoort their schooling, they sought the help of relatives. His older brother was in third year high school.

After high school, he decided to take up a Computer Science course in college, which has been his dream course since his elementary days.

With the help of an uncle, Tano enrolled and pursued a four-year course in Computer Science at Laguan College of Business and Arts. He was also an academic scholar enjoying a 50 percent discount in tuition fees. During summer, he would work at the Calamba City Hall under the government's SPES program until he gained full scholarship.

Tano graduated cum laude in college and later applied at the Quezon City Polytechnic University (QCPU) where he became a member of the faculty. In 2014, after finishing his Masters degree, he decided to take up aDoctorate degree, Doctor in Information Technology (DIT) in AMA University.

He applied for the Quezon City Scholarship Program for Post Graduate Studies. He knew that the scholarship would help him finish his doctorate program which would entail expenses. His income as IT Instructor would not be enough to support his studies. Being a full time instructor, he found it difficult to juggle work and studies, but he perservered.

"When I applied for the scholarship, the qualification was lofty for it was supposed to be availed of by those who have attained Civil Service salary grade 18. During that time, I was _______ salary grade 14. However, I still believed that I would be able to avail myselfof this grant because I needed it. That was my spirit then," Tano said in an interview.

Tano was able to finish the DIT program. He applied for new opened plantilla positions and aws promoted from Instructor III to Associate Professor I. In April 2015, he became OIC-Director of BSIT program in QCPU.

He said he is now committed to help students at the QCPU by updating them on current IT trends.
He added that he would help the Quezon City government by promoting and supporting their plans in helping its constituent transform their lives. scroll back to top
