Mayor Joy Belmonte, on Tuesday, shared the City’s various social programs specifically for migrants and their families and vulnerable groups during the Mayors Migration Council (MMC) meeting in New York, United States.
Mayor Belmonte emphasized that the city faces the displacement of at least 10,000 residents due to extreme typhoons and frequent monsoon rains, and this number could potentially increase as more people from vulnerable regions seek refuge in the city due to the worsening climate crisis.
The mayor also discussed the City’s Migation Resource Center (MRC). It is the first-ever one-stop shop for OFWs and their families in the National Capital Region. It provides assessment and referral services, local employment facilitation, psycho-social first aid, and the provision of relevant information on migration through the OFW Help Desk.
Among the attendees are Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Dhaka North Mayor Atiqul Islam, Nairobi Governor HE Arthur Johnson Sakaja, Barranquilla Mayor Jaime Pumarejo, Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees, Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala, and Amman Mayor H.E. Yousef Al Shawarbeh, members of the Mayor’s Migration Council and C40 Cities.
Also in the meeting are executives of international foundations including Conrad N. Hilton Foundation President and CEO Mr. Peter Laugharn, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation – Climate Global Director Hongpeng Lei, and Robert Bosch Stiftung CEO Dr. Bernhard Straub.
The meeting was organized by C40 Cities and MMC Global Mayors Task Force on Climate and Migration.
