In celebration of “Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa” and Quezon City Day, this article emphasizes and commemorates the significance and contribution of Manuel L. Quezon— a distinguished leader, loving husband, and father to his children, who has had an exceptional impact on the development of both events.
Published in 1997, Proclamation No. 1041 has designated August 1-31 as “Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa,” emphasizing and recognizing the value of the Filipino language as a vital means of communication, understanding, unity, and development of the country. Cited in the same declaration is Manuel Luis Quezon, who has been revered as the “Ama Ng Wikang Pambansa.”
Along with his most notable accomplishment of advocating for the passing of the Jones Act that paved the way for the attainment of Philippine Independence, Quezon was also able to solidify his legacy in Philippine history, especially in the commemoration of Wikang Pambansa, through Executive Order No. 134.
Signed by Quezon during his term, Executive Order No. 134 proclaims the National Language of the Philippines based on the “Tagalog” Language. This became a major step in bringing the country together through a common language.
Apart from being the second president of the Philippines, Quezon is also a visionary leader who is well-known, particularly to all QCitizens, having served as Quezon City’s first mayor. He was the first to envision the city as “Balintawak City.” MLQ was also seen as a leader who genuinely loved and cared for the oppressed and less fortunate.

A symbolic monument with three 66-meter vertical pylons, which represent his age when he passed away, was built in memory of Quezon through the Quezon Memorial Shrine located at the Quezon City Memorial Circle (QCMC).
On August 4, 1989, an act was passed under the Republic Act No. 6741, declaring August 19 of every year a special working holiday throughout the Philippines and a special non-working public holiday in Quezon City, Quezon, and Aurora Province, in honor of his birth anniversary, now known as Quezon City Day.
In Quezon City, history and culture are always highly valued and celebrated.
