Need to Know: The church, as well as the image, traces a rich and historic origin with initial plans for a religious house already being arranged even before the war broke out. Along with the simultaneous post-World War II efforts for rebuilding, Archbishop of Manila, Msgr. Gabriel M. Reyes encouraged the friars to push through with the immediate construction of the house and church.
The National Shrine along Amoranto Avenue is the home of the miraculous and celebrated image of the Our Lady of Lourdes under the care of the Franciscan Capuchins.
The cornerstones were laid on January 29, 1950 attended by Mayor Ignacio Santos Diaz, Don Salvador Araneta and Doña Natividad Zaragoza Tuazon who donated the 10,500 square meter property along Retiro.
Noted architect Luis Ma. Araneta did the preliminary design of the church while architect Carlos Antonio Santos-Viola did the interior in Neo-Romanesque style with bands of decorative motif along the main entrance archways and precast iconographies of the four evangelists (Matthew-Man, Mark-Lion, Luke-Bull, John-Eagle) as capitals of the stunted columns.
The Our Lady of Lourdes image was canonically coronated on August 22, 2020. “Canonical” is the highest distinction given to an image.
