Real Monasterio De La Purisima Conception De Nuestra Madre Santa Clara De Manila And Church Of Our Lady Of The Immaculate Conception
C5 Katipunan Avenue, Brgy., Loyola Heights, Quezon City
Need to Know: In 1762, the British Occupation forced the nuns to leave the monastery and again during World War II. The austere walls of the Royal Monastery were destroyed by carpet bombing which lead to the transfer of the sisters to their provisional monastery at the Franciscan Seraphic College in San Francisco del Monte, Quezon City in 1945. In 1950, they relocated to their newly-built monastery in Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City. However, recent history has again witnessed the movement of the monastery to give way to the C5 extension project in 1995.
Founded in 1621, the Monasterio de Sta. Clara was the first contemplative community of nuns in Asia and was later on vested with Royal Patronage adding the title “Real.”
