The Quezon City Government, led by the QC Engineering Department (QCDE) in cooperation with other city departments and agencies, has built various flood mitigation systems, including retention ponds and detention basins, and has conducted dewatering and pumping operations across the city.
Located within the City Hall compound, a lagoon surrounded by a park acts as a retention pond that can hold up to 13,050 cubic meters of rainwater. An open field with a retention pond has also been opened at the Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC).
Meanwhile, two covered courts in Barangay Sta. Monica and Tandang Sora serve as sports facilities and detention basins. The projects aim to improve stormwater control and promote community resilience and sustainability.
The Palmera Homes Phase 3 covered court in Barangay Sta. Monica has a total floor area of 1,046 square meters and a detention basin with an estimated storage capacity of approximately 1,700 cubic meters — more than half of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
The Gloria 2 Covered Basketball Court in Tandang Sora has a 1,256-cubic-meter detention basin (16.2 m x 27.2 m x 2.85 m), which equates to half of an Olympic-sized swimming pool. It also has a rainwater harvesting system with two water-collecting tanks that can hold up to 7,500 liters of rainwater.
In addition to the completed covered courts, a 2,000-cubic-meter detention basin along Araneta Avenue is currently being built.
Along with retention ponds, detention basins, and regular declogging of drainages, the city government also conducts dewatering and booster pumping as part of its response operations. These actions increase drainage system capacity, prevent flooding, and help flooded areas subside quickly.
As of September 2026, the city government has conducted dewatering and pumping operations in the following locations and detention basins:
- Araneta Avenue cor. E. Rodriguez Avenue, Barangay Tatalon
- Dunhill St., Barangay Fairview
- G. Araneta Avenue cor. Maria Clara Street
- G. Araneta Avenue cor. N.S. Amoranto Street
- Doña Carmen Avenue, Barangay Commonwealth
These mitigation systems support the city’s flood control efforts while providing functional community facilities under the QC Drainage Masterplan.
