The Quezon City Government intensifies its environmental efforts by institutionalizing the repurposing of tarpaulins following the introduction of the Vote to Tote program, in partnership with SPARK Philippines.
Under the initiative, used tarpaulins and election campaign paraphernalia are collected and converted into fashionable bags, which are then sold in department stores and at pop-up events, rather than being sent to landfills.
This aims to lessen the waste and prevent intense flooding caused by the posters.
The program also extends its benefits to the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) at the QC Jail Female Dormitory as part of the city’s “No Women Left Behind” initiative, providing them with valuable livelihood opportunities. Beneficiaries undergo training such as sewing and marketing, empowering them with the means to support themselves.
Since its launch in May 2022, the city has repurposed more than 100 tons of tarpaulins.
