The Quezon City government is set to announce the winners of the first-ever Quezon City Green Awards on October 6 at Novotel Manila Araneta City.

The city has received a total of 80 entries from barangays, Sangguniang Kabataan, youth-based organizations, and businesses for the Green and Resilient Award.

“These community green programs and projects only prove that the city and the community can work together towards a common goal: to create a sustainable, green, and liveable future for all,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

Launched in May, the Quezon City Green Awards: Search for Outstanding Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Climate Action programs recognize and incentivize barangays, Sangguniang Kabataan, youth-based organizations, and businesses that implement innovative and inclusive programs on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Climate Action.

It has two categories – Green Award and Resilient Award. The Green Award honors institutions that have made significant contributions in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable practices, while the Resiliency Award is given to initiatives that demonstrate resilience and preparedness in the face of natural and human-induced hazards.

Quezon City is among the leading cities in the Philippines that pushes for climate justice. In 2019, the city declared a climate emergency which prompted the establishment of various climate solutions and the passage of landmark ordinances for the environment.

QC is also the lone Philippine City member of the C40 Cities, a global network of mayors taking urgent action to confront the climate crisis and create a future where everyone can thrive.
