As part of its continuing efforts to raise awareness on the education crisis as well as garner support for its learning recovery program, the Quezon City Government  launched “Kilo/s Kyusi: Kilo Store ng Bayan, Tulong para sa Kinabukasan” on July 17 at the Quezon City Hall. 

The Kilo/s Kyusi Store will showcase a wide array of pre-loved and never-been-used merchandise that will be up for sale to Quezon City Hall employees and the public. The activity is spearheaded by the Office of the City Mayor, Quezon City Council, Small Business and Cooperatives Development Department (SBCDPO), and Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department (CCESD).

The primary objective of “Kilo/s Kyusi” is to generate funds from the sale  to help bankroll the Quezon City Government’s tutoring program, a learning recovery initiative to reduce non-readers and non-numerates by providing additional academic assistance. 

Proceeds from the bazaar will go to the Quezon City Learning Recovery Fund, a repository for cash donations intended for implementing learning recovery programs for QC public schools.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has called for a whole of society approach to address the education crisis. In its 2022 report, the World Bank estimated that 9 out of 10 children in the Philippines aged 10 are unable to read and understand a simple text.

“A crisis of this magnitude requires all stakeholders to have a unified focus in prioritizing the needs and interests of our children. Kailangan nating agapan agad ang problemang ito dahil malaki ang epekto nito sa ating ekonomiya at sa kinabukasan ng susunod na henerasyon,” Mayor Belmonte said. 

The activity will feature items to be sold in two categories: (a) By Kilo – the price is determined based on the total weight of pre-loved items and (b) Individually priced – high-value items that were hardly used or have never been used and are still in excellent condition.
