Mayor Joy Belmonte shared what ignited her advocacy to prioritize the protection of the environment.
In an interview with UNEP Goodwill Ambassador Antoinette Taus, Mayor Belmonte recalled the devastation brought by Typhoon Ondoy in 2009 that caused flooding in the city, and left an overwhelming amount of garbage like plastic waste.
Her recognition as the UNEP Champion of the Earth has served as her motivation to further create initiatives and efforts towards a green, livable, and sustainable future for QCitizens.
Mayor Belmonte also highlighted how cities like Quezon City play a major role in solving environmental problems. Local authorities closely work with stakeholders to effectively address the needs of vulnerable sectors.
The mayor, Coun. Vito Sotto Generoso, and Kristine Lea Sy-Gaon of the Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department (CCESD) attended the sixth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) in Nairobi, Kenya.
