Mpox is a viral disease caused by the Mpox virus, which belongs to the family of orthopoxvirus, and is often evidenced by large rashes all over the face, inside the mouth, and on your hands, feet, chest, genitals, and butt. Despite the mildness of mpox symptoms, it can still lead to serious illness, especially for people with a weak immune system.
SYMPTOMS OF MPOX:
- Back ache
- Sore lymph nodes
- Headache
- Body pain
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Sore throat
- Rashes
HOW IS MPOX TRANSMITTED:
- Close contact
- Skin to skin contact
- Respiratory droplet
- Kissing
- Direct contact to a contaminated object
- Direct contact to a wound or mucosal surfaces like mouth, eyes, and genitals
Not just one particular group is susceptible to Mpox. It can be anyone — women, men, young, and old can be infected, especially if they had close contact or were exposed to someone with Mpox or a contaminated object.
HOW TO AVOID GETTING MPOX:
- Be updated and have enough knowledge regarding the MPOX disease.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizer.
- Don’t share items like towels, clothes, among others.
- Avoid close contact with people who exhibit symptoms of MPOX. If with close contact, monitor yourself.
- Head to the nearest health center for consultation and medicine.
WHAT TO DO IF THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF MPOX:
- If you are experiencing symptoms such as rashes, fever, and fatigue despite not having any close contact in the past 30 days, book a consultation at the nearest health center in your area.
- If you’ve had skin-to-skin contact in the past 30 days or have traveled to another country without experiencing symptoms, avoid interacting with others and closely monitor your health.
- If you’ve had skin-to-skin contact and are currently experiencing symptoms of mpox, isolate yourself immediately to prevent its transmission and contact your health center to check your health status.
- You may report your condition to the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division of the Quezon City Health Department.
