The Quezon City Government, led by the QC Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO) and the QC Department of Engineering (QCDE), in partnership with the University of the Philippines – Resilience Institute, has developed a city-wide Drainage Master Plan (DMP).

Relying on science and nature-based solutions to mitigate flooding, the creation of DMP involves identifying, developing, and selecting the best solutions, such as physical modifications and upgrades, necessary for drainage and flood management improvements. 

The DMP covers all of the city’s 142 barangays and integrates all 44 tributaries and 5 major river systems that pass through the city’s jurisdiction as well as the man-made drainage systems built by the various government agencies involved in drainage and roadworks.

Following the DMP, various infrastructure projects, including detention basins, flood interceptors, stormwater storage panel systems, and slope protection works, are constructed. 

As of July 2026, the city has opened two basketball courts equipped with detention basins: one in Palmera Homes Phase III, Barangay Sta. Monica, which has a capacity of 1,700 cubic meters, and another in Gloria 2 Subdivision, Barangay Tandang Sora, which can hold 1,256 cubic meters of water—equivalent to an Olympic-sized swimming pool.  

In addition to serving as a sports facility and detention basin, the Tandang Sora basketball court has two harvesting tanks that can store over 15,000 liters of water. 

The QCDE also continues to boost the city’s flood mitigation efforts by conducting dredging and clearing operations, building a detention basin and retention pond at the Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC), and constructing another detention basin along G. Araneta Ave.
